Your Data

‘Your data’ means everything you have ever saved on your computer, plus everything that has been saved by the programs you have run.

Examples of data saved on your computer:
  • Letters and emails, CVs, school or college work
  • Names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers
  • Financial and tax calculations
  • Calendar appointments
  • Favourite websites
  • Photographs
  • Music
  • Saved state of games
One thing is absolutely certain - among all this data there are bound to be some items which you really don’t want to lose.

But the sad truth is that there are still some computer repairers who will casually destroy your data, because it is often the quickest way to get a computer working.
Or you might actually do it yourself by running a system recovery procedure.

The process by which your data is destroyed involves formatting the hard drive and possibly deleting and recreating partitions.
Even at this point your data might still be recoverable, but the next step is to reinstall Windows, which causes your files to be overwritten.
Your repairer might do this without your knowledge or consent
-  or they might ask your permission (making it sound as though you really have no choice)
-  or they might want you to sign an agreement which gives them the right to do this

These repairers are really saying that they don’t want to take the trouble to look after your data.

We DO want to take that trouble, and it WON’T cost you the earth.
